I am really excited to be joined by the fabulous Philippa Aldridge from holds my hand coaching Philipa is not only a very, very dear friend of mine, she is a coach on the Thrive coaching programme. And Phillip is are you are a mindset coach for the poor, aren’t you?

Philippa:

Yes, I am. Yes. If you haven’t listened

Katie Bell:

to Phillip, his previous episode that we have,we have recorded together, you must because it was one of my favourites and I know I say that all the time. But I invited Phillip back for many reasons, but because I think one of the most powerful observations that you can have as a business owner is that you can have all the strategy and you can have all the marketing going on. And you can be trying to do more and be more and work harder and tick those to do lists off. But often, there is something much bigger that gets in our way. And we you are often the biggest barrier to your own success. And success is however you however you deem success to look like from income time, freedom, flexibility, whatever. And, and I wanted Philip to kind of get us to really dig into this and understand what things do get in our way. And what can we as business owners do to a understand it, acknowledge it,acknowledge that these these things? Are there for many reasons, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for not so good reasons. But what can we what can we do as high achievers as people who just want to be able to crack on and get to the next thing? What can we do about these things that do get in our way? So we’re going to talk about self sabotage?

Philippa:

Yes, we are. So felucca tell us

Katie Bell:

what on earth is self sabotage a why as clinic owners and studio owners do we need to know?

Philippa:

So self sabotage is?Well, if you go to the dictionary, and you look at the definition of sabotage that actual word, it’s the act of intentionally preventing the success of a plan or action. So self sabotage is the act of intentionally preventing the success of our own plans and our own actions, which, which for a part of me seems absolutely ludicrous. Why would we intentionally prevent our own success? What’s that all about?Uh, but I mean, basically, as a mindset coach, it basically we are getting in our own way.Yeah, and we do this for lots of different reasons. And I think it’s important to be aware that it’s a part of us will do this to another part of us or to many parts of us, not because it hates us. But because there is a perceived threat. It’s really important to be aware of the fact that more often than not,you are self sabotaging yourself, because a part of you fears, what the action means to you. So it’s not that you fear creating packages, it’s not that you’re scared of, you know, changing the investment levels in your business. It’s what those things mean to you. So,it’s very important as business owners that we start to explore, yes, what I would refer to as the metaphoric realm. So, we know literally, I’m getting in my own way, and I’m not changing the structure of my business.Yeah. What’s that all about? Why is that happening? What does it mean to me? And that’s the that’s the literal realm. And we want to come into the metaphoric realm of what does it mean to us? Does it mean, you know, I’m worried that people will leave me do Am I worried because no one’s going to like me anymore.Yeah. Am I worried because it means, you know, I don’t feel good enough if I, you know, all of those sorts of things so, and that’s what we try and explore in coaching and where and where does that come from? And what’s that all about? And, and when did that start? And have I been doing that for ages? Because funnily enough, yes, this won’t be your first rodeo into self sabotage. Yeah, this will be you will have been doing this and running this programme. Yeah. Or as I like to say, putting that tape in the tape deck. Yeah. So in that old Yes, cassettes were a thing in my day. Yeah, you will, we’ll be putting that tape in the tape deck, a part of you will and running that set, that tune is gone really loud of can’t do that. We can’t do that.Because well, people are gonna think of us, no one’s gonna like us. What if they all leave? Oh,no, you know, so it’s important to dig a little bit deeper.

Katie Bell:

Yeah, I mean, just listening to you, then I was thinking, you know, for I’m thinking about it. And our listeners will be thinking, do I self sabotage? Am I a person that does that? You know, and I think what’s important to know is that everybody, everybody has this to some degree at some point in their life. And often when you are taking the next leap in your business, or you’re having to maybe as you’ve said, let’s say we’re going from Pay As You Go model to introducing programmes, or we are recruiting or bringing the next team member that’s going to move your, your, your, your profit levels, your turnover on to that next step. This is where it really shows up, doesn’t it?

Philippa:

Yep, definitely.Definitely. And I think it’s important, like you said, to recognise that, that everybody experiences this to some degree yet. It’s also important to start to connect with what is your default setting when it comes to sort of sabotaging yourself? Yes, there are lots of different ways of doing it. You know, some people procrastinate, some people become overwhelmed. Some people over give start to over please. Some people find themselves lost in perfection, paralysis, whatever it might be,there are lots of different ways of getting in our own way, and sabotaging our success. So start to be curious about what it is that you do. And it might not be that you suddenly think, Oh, I’m procrastinating right now, it might be that you find yourself sat on the sofa watching Netflix, because it’s absolutely vital that you watch the new on a documentary, because that’s going to help you to be a better business owner, or whatever it might be. Yeah, or it might be.So for example, and I may or may not have mentioned this last time, my if I am really procrastinating I am cleaning the grout of the bathroom tiles with my special tooth. I have a special toothbrush, so and so it might not be that you’re thinking I’m gonna label it procrastination, or I’m labelling it as overthinking or perfection, it might be that you can actually start to recognise just the action of always take the dog on really long walks. Or suddenly, it’s vital that, you know, I’ve painted my nails or something like that, or it might be anything. So just start to be curious about what it is that you do to avoid stuff. And it might even be ticking off all those little things on your list might in it. Katie as well. Lots of people suddenly are are sabotaging their success by not eating that frog. Yes. I think Brian Tracy wrote that book, wasn’t it? Yeah. And you will be ticking off all the other little things around the big thing? You know, so you don’t have to do it. Yeah. And

Katie Bell:

we see that Philippa, don’t worry, I guess, you know, what do we see when we’re when we’re coaching our clinic and studio owners. Every day, we see self sabotage in so many different forms. And it’s important as coaches, for us to understand how it can show up.And it’s and to encourage our clients to be curious about how that might be showing up and why. And we’re going to explore why self sabotage does show up in our lives. But it’s, I guess it’s getting them to see that you have strengths. And I don’t ever really like the word weaknesses. But that reflects my personality a lot. You’re just laughing Phillip. But we have you know, we do that we do the StrengthsFinder test, don’t we?We like the Colby test. We like the six working geniuses assessment, we do the AMA. So we know our clients really well. And we get our clients to know themselves really well and their teams really well. And this often gives us a profile of who we are and what we’re hardwired to be like in certain scenarios. And so I have my Clifton Strengths Finder, and I was only talking to this to a client the other day, but it’s seeing that even though that tells me these are your five top strengths,Katie this is what you’re hardwired to be Like in any given time, so it will come as no shock to the listeners or to you Philip or to seek to know that mine is competitiveness.

Philippa:

Sorry, I’m trying not to laugh. You know, we’ll

Katie Bell:

also said, if we’re gonna get on a treadmill, only only two is gonna happen, you know, you’re gonna die first, or I’m gonna get off first, exactly the same, I will rupture a hamstring to win the cereal box game. You know, that’s, that’s how we go. But I will also only involve myself in something that I know I have got a very strong chance of winning. So it’s not about being competitive in every situation. It’s about going. That’s where I know I can really excel. And I put myself in those situations. achiever is another one positivity, empathy, certain futuristic, they’re my five hardwired strengths. But as an achiever, and as somebody who’s competitive, my biggest form of self sabotage is over pleasing, and is over delivering, because I’m hard wired to work in that way. And so it’s really interesting, isn’t it, that you’ve got this kind of conundrum that like, actually, that’s what I’m really, really good at doing. But I can actually be self sabotaging at the same time.

Philippa:

Yeah, totally. And that’s where the paradox lies. And you’ve just moved straight into the third realm, which is a paradoxical realm. But you know, you know, so I have a part of me, but a part of me wants to do this, but a part of me knows that it’s holding me back. But part of me knows that I’m really good at it. But I know that it’s, and that’s why we end up getting confused. And that’s why we end up not doing anything, or staying in our metaphorical comfort zone. Even though it is uncomfortable for a part of us,it’s actually easier to stay there than to try and work out what’s going on. And this is we’re sort of working in your zone of genius. In Gay Hendricks book, The Big Leap is so important to be aware of. And I think, for me in the StrengthsFinder I came out of the Clifton Strengths Finder, I can’t remember the exact words but I have three and execution and two and relationships. So I am incredibly good at getting stuff done. But that is also the undoing of me because it means that I overwork I overdue and I’m incredibly high detailed as we all know because I’m a blue.Yeah, on the IMA Hi. Yeah, that’s, uh, you know, these are fun things that we laugh about.I can laugh, okay, is eveness she can laugh at my high detail this? Yeah, it’s like it. But that is a strength. But also,I’m gonna use the word area for development rather than weakness. Yeah, in because it can be the undoing of me sometimes in that I can’t move forward because of want more detail. But actually, the detail is, what is a strength as well.So yeah, no wonder we get confused. And we get in our own way.

Katie Bell:

Is it? Isn’t it difficult and, and we we know about it, we’re aware of it, we help our clients move through it. But yeah, you and me Philipa. And, um, I like to be transparent. And we are real normal people, you know, on this podcast, we get it, we have it.I’m doing a bloody activity today. And I’m just gonna lay this on the line. Because even though you can be a business owner that’s kind of moving to the next level in your life. And, you know, maybe seven figures, maybe eight figures, whatever it is maybe from five figures to six figures, it doesn’t matter. Matt, one of the things that I’m doing today is I’m writing on this spreadsheet, every activity that I do between my working hours today, everything every time I check an email, I record a podcast, I fill my diary in and move some paper around, take pictures of receipts, whatever it is, I’ve got a document when I started when I finish it the timespan and then by eliminating it,delegating it, or deleting it,or eliminating it, delegating it or doing it, okay. Because as you just said, Philipa when I know that there are elements of the business that I have got to be what focused on, but because I’m an overachiever, and I’m competitive, I think I can do it better than everybody else. So I start doing everything. And I’ve got to do this task to go, Okay,I spent X amount of hours doing things that I could have got somebody else to do, who is far better at that job than me,which would free me up that time to go and work on that new lead magnet or, you know, whatever next big thing that you want to do in your business. So we’ve got to have like actual strategies, haven’t we even whatever level of your business to help you kind of crack these and move forwards?

Philippa:

Definitely, definitely. And I think it’s really interesting is is for for lots of us. When we started our business, we probably started as a team of one, maybe two. So we had to do everything. And so actually we have become very efficient at doing things that aren’t in our zone of genius because we’ve had to write so therefore the idea of having to give it to somebody else who may not hit the ground running with it because they’ve got to learn a few bits about for some of us because we are controlling views, yes, that can create anxiety around that as well. So it’s also being aware of the fact that we can actually tell ourselves, we can tell ourselves a story that I can do it better than it’s easier or save time,if I do it rather than having to explain it to somebody else, and then then learn how to do it to do it. But we’re only seeing the short term, we’re not seeing the long term, we live in a world of instant gratification now, yes,but also our ego wants instant gratification. So it also doesn’t understand it can’t future pace, it doesn’t understand what how that’s going to benefit us in the future. And this is where we sabotage ourselves as well, because actually, it’s easier if I do it. And we tell ourselves that story. It’s easier if I do it,but it’s not seeing the bigger picture. But also because a part of us doesn’t want to relinquish control. And we know that if we do that, we are going to evolve, which is exactly what your ego doesn’t want, it does not want change. You are surviving where you are. So why the hell would you change anything? Stay there. But obviously, the whole point is we want to be thriving, the more evolve parts of self, our soul wants us to thrive to fulfil our purpose, you know, all of those sorts of things. But our ego doesn’t want that.So there is this is important for all of us to be aware that sometimes there are there is an internal conflict happening within. You’re not crazy. That is normal. So in having those mixed messages bandied around in your head is absolutely fine. But it but it’s just being aware of why is that part of me doing that? Why is it sabotaging my sex success? Why is it getting in my way? Because it doesn’t want things to change, because of what it means to you. Because it all it sees is a pattern of before of maybe you’ve changed something and it went wrong.Maybe you change something and you lost friends. Maybe you changed something and your family didn’t support you? Yes.So it’s, or you’ve seen somebody else doing it. And it didn’t go right for them. So your ego bases, its thought of what the result is going to be based on evidence of previous experiences, even if those experiences aren’t necessarily related to this one. It might be for example, okay, wearing a bra skirt and a side ponytail to Saturday afternoon, disco when you were eight. Yes. So we’d all agreed we were going to do that.Yes. I turned up and did that.Yes, side ponytail rub our skirt. Yes. Nobody else did. They were wearing like fishnet hand things and all kinds of stuff. And like that word what?I wasn’t part of the group anymore. I’d, I’d carried on and done it. So an A part of me felt like I was completely ostracised. So why would I try something new. In the future, when a part of me always feels like I’m going to be left out and sort of shunned as it were.So be aware that even sometimes, those feelings aren’t even related to the act of increasing your investment levels changing to packages. It’s related to something that happened so long ago, but your ego is using that as evidence. So we have to dig a little bit deeper and be kind and remember, it’s not because your egos horrible. It’s not because that part of you is horrible. It’s because that part of you is scared. And it wants to protect you and keep you safe. Because for the ego. The only reason is all it needs is for you to survive and reproduce and stay safe. That’s it doesn’t need anything else from you.

Katie Bell:

Wow, I’ll just adjust a little bit. So self sabotage, what forms can it take flight? because there’ll be there’ll be the movement, some listeners thinking, Well, I don’t I don’t have self sabotage. I don’t do that. But everybody has it. Because if nobody had it, they would all be exactly where they wanted to be,they would have all of their goals and there would be nothing left to achieve. So what kind of things do you see for when we’re in our coaching mode with our clients? How does self sabotage show up?

Philippa:

So we see people procrastinating we see people feeling overwhelmed. We see people second guessing themselves, doubting themselves,we see people over giving over pleasing that perfection paralysis, but it doesn’t even it doesn’t even come out as I’m procrastinating it might be they’re doing all the other things, but avoiding that one thing that we all know is the thing that’s going to take them to the next level. Yes. And that’s really important to be aware of. For all of us that thing that you were avoid doing the thing that is causing you the most stress? Yeah. Is more often than not, that is the thing that’s going to catapult your business forward that’s actually going to set you free. And it’s being aware of that. It’s also people who find themselves exhausted as well. A lot of it turns up in exhaustion because they’re overdoing in other stuff. Yes. So and all that overthinking and second guessing themselves, because things are taking a really long time. Or we have all the if buts and maybes coming out. So they don’t realise that they’re procrastinating. They don’t realise they’re overthinking, but they’re saying, but if I put it to this level, like if I changed for money to this amount of money, but you know, I haven’t put this in, if they worked it out, it would be this amount an hour, but you know, and, and they overthink all of that goes into into that but they don’t necessarily realise that that self sabotage, a part of them tells them a story that it’s actually, you know, being aware of the detail, as it were.

Katie Bell:

Yeah. And I guess in terms

Philippa:

of clinic owners, physios, osteopath, Pilates instructors, massage

Katie Bell:

therapists, what we,what we are coaching day in, day out for the PERT the things that jumped out to me in kind of what people really are doing is a lot of them procrastinate around the knowing and numbers.

Philippa:

Yeah, yeah,

Katie Bell:

that that really is something that I feel like I’m forever banging the drum about because we I like to run a lot through metrics and really understand the numbers. And it’s something that we have to almost back people into a corner in the nicest possible way of thinking about a few of my clients. And if you’re listening to this, then you should be doing your numbers. Because you just said them, Philip, if they can, if they can just do it, it will catapult them into that feeling of freedom. And I know that if they knew their numbers, they would feel calmer, they would make decisions from a place of abundance, they would make, they will make decisions not not from a place of lack, but they wouldn’t be chasing the money and feeling like they need to wrap themselves around constantly and be everything to everybody. Because the numbers are telling them something different. So that jumps out to me is one of the biggest areas people people procrastinate. The The other area that jumps out to me and the type of client that we work with is over pleasing,is the boundaries that you set between you and client, you know, their customers, and you and your team.

Philippa:

I think I think as well with those boundaries and that over pleasing it again, it’s to do with being liked, isn’t it is as well, we see it’s and it’s also to do with not people not leaving me. Yeah. And then this is where the StrengthsFinder and the IMA high come in really, really, really helpful at this point. Because I do a lot of talking around that, you know, well, you know, if you’re yellow, my darling, you want everyone to like you. Yeah, that’s gonna, that’s gonna happen. Yeah. And so be it. Be aware of that. And actually, perhaps you’re not the best person to be running the team and leading the team, because that’s not going to help help you because you can’t separate yourself. So therefore, why set yourself up for a fall every time because by being the person that’s managing the team, you get somebody else in to do that.Yes. So there’s, but I think for the, it’s knowing as well, there’s a part of them is also stuck in for me when you said about knowing the numbers about over pleasing, it’s also they get stuck in the action of actually delivering the service. And not actually taking that step back so that they can take that bird’s eye view of the business as the business owner, they’re spending too much time in service delivery, and not enough time out of the business working on it. Because a part of them, because it’s comfortable, isn’t it? Because it’s what you’ve been doing for a long time. But it that’s not going to propel your business forward, either. But it’s also then I’m going off on one going off on one. It’s also then understanding why you need to do that. Is it because you need the validation and acknowledgement from your clients when you’re doing that service delivery? And that a part of you needs that attention. And if that is then I mean that’s something else that I’ve coached on you know what why do you need that? Where’s that coming from? Can you give yourself internal acknowledgement and validation rather than looking for external sources? But I don’t want to get get off track here because I know I couldn’t you and I could talk for hours about all of this. So but I think it’s being aware for every anybody listening to this? Yeah, if you are avoiding doing something, if there is something in your business that you have been avoiding, because a part of you fears it either because you’ve made it you know, into from a molehill into a mountain, or because a part of you is telling you it’s too hard. All of that Those sorts of things, be curious with yourself about why am I avoiding this? What’s this all about? And just asking questions with compassion, and curiosity, rather than with blame, shame and judgement. So rather than going, Why am I not doing this? What’s this all about? us a different tone of voice. And actually ask yourself those questions out loud, and see what comes up for you.Because you might be surprised by the answers that part a different parts of you throw up,a part of you may say you’re scared, a part of you may say, I don’t know how to do it. A part of you might be like, but what if it works? You know, so it’s them being aware of, and again, this is a whole nother podcast on fear. And we’re not going there, obviously, so we can talk about that. But it’s being aware of the fact that one, one self sabotage is because a part of us is fearful of what that action means to us. So that metaphoric meaning, and then the paradox that it then throws up. So then we would move to the creative realm if I was coaching you. And we would create a new story around that and what that meant, and then we would start to shift how we were believing and thinking about it, you know, so,but, yeah, I’ve gone on again,Katie, you know how I like to.

Katie Bell:

I just love it. I just love it. And so I’m a I’m a, I’m an achiever, I’m a competitive person and positivity I want now my my ego was going okay, Philippa. So I know I saw some charge. I know I ever please. I know I ever deliver. What? How do I get out of my head? Like, how? How can I give me the two dues? Because obviously, that’s what my brain likes, likes an action list like, so how to? How do I? How do I deal with this stuff?

Philippa:

So you deal with it with curiosity? Yeah. So if you know that you’re procrastinating, or you know that you’re avoiding something or you’re know that you’re over giving, just sometimes the saying that I am over giving right now is enough for a different part of you to sort of kick in, as it were. But also, again, is the compassion, compassion. And curiosity is really, really important here.Because most people, what they will do is they will go, I’m just going to put my big girl pants on, or I’m just going to grow up and get on with it. And I’m going to put on and shut up.That doesn’t work for the long term. So most people push those negative voices to one side or push it down. And I’m just gonna get on with it. It’s gonna come back louder. Listen to that part of you. Ask that part of you. What’s that all about? Yeah, write it down. Or speak out. We’ve talked about the otter app. I think before it’s a dictation app, just talk to otter and it will write down all your thoughts as you talk Yes,about what it’s all about. But also ask yourself, How is over pleasing serving a part of me right now? How is it not serving another part of me? So it might be serving in that one part of you because it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside? Yeah, because you’re serving your clients or because actually, it makes you feel calmer. It might not be serving another part of you because you’re anxious because you’re not getting it done. But just being aware of what different parts of you are feeling is again, enough, sometimes for a part of you to be able to go Oh, that’s okay. I can move forward. The other there are three questions that lots of my clients use, when they find themselves in a situation where they are avoiding something or they are self sabotaging themselves. And they are three questions how long? How much? How often? So how long do I want to avoid doing this thing for? And how much do I want to avoid it? You know, are we talking toothbrush ground level? Are we talking Netflix on the sofa level? Are we talking an extra 20 minutes on the dog walker level? So how much how deeply? And how often? Do I want to do this? Do I want to be doing this every day? Or maybe I’m going to allow myself, you know, once a week, or am I going to just do this for 20minutes, you know, so how long how much how often so and you can create an agreement with yourself. Because a part of you might need that downtime. Because remember that self sabotage is a stress response. And for a part of us it may actually need to watch TV just to bring yourself down a bit, or to go and clean or whatever it might be, or to over give for a little bit because it needs that attention. But you can also then agree to when you’re going to stop it as well. And that’s important because a part of you then realise is that you actually have control over this, which again your ego lights even though you Ego is running this programme. And you have a choice. And but also, the another thing to do is to connect with things like your why, and your values within your business so that you reconnect with that mission of what you’re doing. Because also, quite often, a part of us has forgotten why we’re doing what we’re doing. And it doesn’t understand that if I know my numbers, that’s actually going to help be mean that I can actually help more people. And when we start to remember that, you know that this is what I’m doing, because I don’t want anybody else to be in pain. Yes, because I want people to have access to amazing quality physiotherapy, yeah, whenever they need it. Yeah, well, if I need to do my numbers, then because if we don’t do that, then I can’t achieve that. I can’t achieve that if I don’t do my numbers, because my business might not last, you know, all of those sorts of things. So connecting with that, why, also make sure as well that you you have regular breaks. So sometimes the reason why people find themselves sabotaging is they have not got that balance within the so they are working and working and working, they don’t have a lunch break. Yeah, they don’t have a time that they stop, you know, they’re still working when they’re doing bits and pieces, you know, the number of people that I talked to, we’re still trying to schedule social media, when they’re walking their children home from school, or the children are playing at the park, and they’re still trying to answer emails or things like that balance, you’ve got to create that balance, it will also come in, we’ll get in our own way, if we’re tired as well. So make sure you’re having those regular breaks, but also have that support system in place, if you’ve got team and your team are being supported by you, you need to be supported. Yes, it’s so important that you have that support as well. And even if you are on your own running your business, you must be supported. Your clients are not there to support you. You need to have that support team. And and one last thing that I want to say is when you’re running a business, please don’t fall into the trap of thinking that your family or your support team. Because that’s not fair, your family and your friends, your family and your friends, they’re there to create balance. It’s really important that you have your business buddies, your coach, whoever it is, who are there to support you in your business, so that you create that balance, otherwise, your brain becomes exhausted. And I

Katie Bell:

think that’s so powerful, because you are fed up and we actually met didn’t we through a business coach, years and years and years ago now. And you’re still coached. And I’m still coaching and we’re both involved in in mastermind groups and our clients that come into our mastermind programmes, they’re in a mastermind group, because it’s having that community of like minded people that are around you, and, you know, your family or not, are not those people, they are never going to get working back to back on a clinical diary. They’re never going to get all of the complexities around running as a you know, a Pilates studio and the lesson planning and all of the ins and outs that they’re never going to have the empathy that sometimes you need in a mastermind group.

Philippa:

Totally, totally. And I think it’s really important. And I think it’s unfair to ask that of them. Yes. And they find your tribe find your people, I think for you and I it made such a difference to us in our businesses having our tribes and still does, yeah, I can’t recommend it highly enough. You know, it is so important to be able to share that with with other business owners definitely. And it’s important for your mindset, because if your ego doesn’t feel like it has a tribe, if it constantly feels like it’s not connecting, that is going to create stress response with your new as well that is going to make everything more difficult is actually part of your mindset strategy. Yeah, so your business mindset strategy is there as well we’ve got to have those people around you

Katie Bell:

Yeah, and I think that just finishes it this episode Philippines so beautifully in a way that you can we say this, you can’t out train a bad diet. And then in exactly the same way, you you,you cannot out strategy, a faulty mindset or a mindset that that that requires development. They both have to come hand in hand.

Philippa:

Definitely. Philippa,thank
