About this episode
Hello, and welcome back to the Treat Your Business podcast! I’m Katie Bell, and I’m thrilled to have you here with us today. If you’re new to the podcast, a warm welcome to you too. Today’s episode marks the final installment of our special series dedicated to exploring the fundamental pillars of business success. If you’ve missed any of the previous episodes, don’t worry – you can catch up at any time.
Summary and Key Takeaways:
In this episode, we delved deep into one of the most crucial yet often overlooked aspects of entrepreneurship: mindset. I was joined by the incredible Philippa Aldridge, our holistic and mindset coach at Thrive, we embarked on a journey to uncover why you, as the business owner, are the cornerstone of your business’s growth and success.
Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
- You Are the Foundation: Your business is a reflection of you. Your values, beliefs, and mindset are intricately woven into every aspect of your venture. Recognising this truth is the first step towards unlocking your full potential as an entrepreneur.
- The Power of Mindset: Your mindset can either propel your business forward or hold it back. Investing in your mindset is not just about personal development; it’s a strategic move that can drive tangible results in your business
- Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs: Fear of failure, fear of success, and fear of self-awareness are common barriers that entrepreneurs face. By identifying and addressing these fears, you can pave the way for growth and transformation.
- Mindset + Strategy = Success: While strategy is essential, it’s your mindset that ultimately determines your success. The synergy between mindset work and strategic planning is the secret sauce for sustainable growth and fulfillment.
As we wrap up today’s episode, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what you’ve learned. Are there any mindset shifts you can make to propel your business forward? Treat Your Business EP70
[00:00:00] Katie Bell: We are going back to basics once again today. This is the fourth and final episode of this kind of mini series that we have been doing over the last few weeks. If you haven’t caught up with the last three episodes, then I would encourage you to go listen to those first because we’re talking about the key foundations.
[00:00:17] Katie Bell: that business owners need, whether you are just starting out on your journey, thinking about opening a practice, whether you are a fully fledged business owner with multiple clinics and lots of team or whether you are a sole opener, this is for you. Today is the fourth foundation, and we are going to be talking about, with a fabulous guest speaker, I would love to add, Philippa, who is our holistic and mindset coach within Thrive.
[00:00:43] Katie Bell: She is going to be talking with us today about The most important one, I think it actually needs to be number one, is you. You as the business owner. And we are going to dive into understanding why you are the biggest barrier to growth and success in your business
[00:01:47] Katie Bell: A huge welcome back to the Treat Your Business podcast.
[00:01:50] Philippa Aldridge: Thank you. So excited
[00:01:52] Katie Bell: that you are here. Cause I know that our listeners absolutely love listening to you when you go on to the podcast. Let’s dive in Philippa because we are here to talk about the fourth foundational element, which I actually think probably needs to be number one.
[00:02:06] Katie Bell: The fourth foundational element of any business owner, clinic owner, studio owner needs, whether you are a solopreneur, whether you are a fully fledged clinic owner with multiple clinics, lots of team whether you are just starting out on your journey or thinking about starting your practice, people always ask me like, what are the key things that I need to know?
[00:02:28] Katie Bell: And what are the key things that we often forget as we get on the hamster wheel of our business life and cycle and we get busy? These are the things that I think we forget about. So let’s dive in because the fourth foundational element, which is why you are here, is to talk about. them as the business owner, as the clinic owner the person, the human being running
[00:02:50] Philippa Aldridge: that clinic.
[00:02:51] Philippa Aldridge: Yeah. And I think the thing here is, and you and I obviously have talked about this as well, is that the business is born from a place of passion for most of us is born from, or a place of great knowledge and understanding. Yes. We are experts in our field and therefore we have to remember if the business is then born from.
[00:03:12] Philippa Aldridge: That place or birthed from that place. You as the business owner, your values, your beliefs, your very fiber is intrinsically, Wrapped into the business. And then it goes all the way through the business when you’re, whether you’re seeing patients, team, whether you’re putting procedures together, whatever it might be, you are the foundation of it all.
[00:03:39] Philippa Aldridge: And so it’s really important that you remember that you, as the business owner, have to be in a great place. Space from a mindset point of view, your mindset is going to have a massive impact on your business, positively or negatively. And I’ve said that, your business is you are your business.
[00:04:03] Philippa Aldridge: It doesn’t mean that has to become all consuming, but we do have to remember that your business and where your business is at is a direct reflection of where you are at. So if you are wobbling, as it were, your business will wobble. If you are confused, Your business will be confused and this is why obviously I do what I do because mindset work is so important.
[00:04:30] Philippa Aldridge: It’s going to make a massive difference to where your business is at. And I think we both see that, don’t we, Katie in, with the people that we work with. Those people who’ve worked on their mindset, great businesses. Yeah. Those people who haven’t. Maybe not quite as great or don’t have the longevity and the repeatable success and the ability to grow.
[00:04:55] Philippa Aldridge: They might still have great businesses, but they haven’t got that longevity. They haven’t got repeatability within it. They haven’t got growth. They haven’t got success. But it’s not, so it’s not where they want to be because they haven’t worked on their mindset. I don’t know if there’s anything you want to add to that.
[00:05:11] Katie Bell: I agree. I think this is to reassure our listeners. This is like 98 percent of people that we work with. And most of the time they come needing or thinking that they need the strategy. And absolutely there’s not one person that we’ve ever worked with, Philippa, that doesn’t need the strategy and doesn’t need that.
[00:05:29] Katie Bell: That kind of planning and the knowhow and the actual like, how do I go and implement this and make this happen? . But what I think we do so beautifully in Thrive, and I’m gonna blow our own trumpet Yeah. Do right. Is that we recognize that you can’t out strategy a faulty as I would say, a faulty mindset.
[00:05:49] Katie Bell: Yeah. And when we first start that journey. With all of our amazing clinic owners, it’s bringing this stuff to the surface first. And it can feel uncomfortable, and it can feel a little bit vulnerable, and it can feel like it being quite raw and out there, but we know from all of the clinic owners that we work with, if we don’t address this stuff, Then you can’t just do more.
[00:06:14] Katie Bell: You can’t just get busier. You can’t just double down. You can’t just hustle harder and expect to get to the next level. Those business owners who do go to the next level are the ones that have focused on this
[00:06:26] Philippa Aldridge: first. Who’ve worked on their mindset. And that’s, and I think I want to also reassure people here is you could have been in business for five years, 10 years, and you can start working on your mindset now and make a massive difference to your business.
[00:06:39] Philippa Aldridge: So no matter where you are on your business journey, but you, we all have to acknowledge that working on your mindset is the thing that is going to propel you forward faster. Than doing more. And if this isn’t about doing more, this is about being more, this is about really connecting with who you are and that is a journey that we go on in Thrive.
[00:07:06] Philippa Aldridge: Yes. And it is a mindset journey. And like you said, some parts of it are uncomfortable. But that’s obviously the beauty of why you have a trained mindset coach with you, as well. Yeah. This is what I do all the time. And it’s also born from my passion because it made a massive difference to when I had my fitness business.
[00:07:27] Philippa Aldridge: My fitness business grew exponentially as a result of the work that I did on my mindset. I didn’t do any more. I actually did less in my business and worked on me. And my business grew and it was just nuts and we’re not brought up in a society. Sorry I’m off on one now. You’ve set me off.
[00:07:49] Philippa Aldridge: We’re not brought up. If you’re brought up in the UK, yes, especially in England, in, in our education system, if you’ve been brought up in the, this education system, you aren’t taught to be more, you’re taught to do more. And obviously everyone who is, we’re talking to, it’s got great qualifications, are experts in their field, but they’ve done it through doing more, working harder, learning more, greater qualifications.
[00:08:14] Philippa Aldridge: But actually, we don’t need to work on that to be amazing business owners. Got to work on yourself. And this was something I also said to you, wasn’t it, as well, that we’re talking about this. If you think about big business owners, like incredibly successful Business owners, they’re not doing all the time.
[00:08:37] Philippa Aldridge: They are working on their mindset and they, that is a priority for them because they know that they have to be in tip top condition because if they’re not in tip top condition, their business isn’t in tip top condition. You know me, Katie. I went off on one. Over to you. I
[00:08:55] Katie Bell: love it. I love it. I’m letting you go.
[00:08:57] Katie Bell: I always think when I come up with, in situations in the business, the first place that I always look is within. Yep. First place. Whether it’s a marketing issue, whether it’s a finance issue, whether it’s a process issue, whether it’s a team issue, whether it’s a productivity issue, anything like that.
[00:09:18] Katie Bell: The first thing that I always do is go, okay, why has this been sent?
[00:09:23] Philippa Aldridge: What is this trying to show
[00:09:24] Katie Bell: me? And I take 100 percent responsibility, right up again for it, because very often it is because you as the business owner might be let’s give people examples, Philippa, so they can really connect with this.
[00:09:40] Katie Bell: Like I’m thinking, okay, so some of the productivity or efficiency or operational issues that that we can have in my clinic is born out of a place of control. It’s that as a business owner. You don’t want to give up the control. Okay, why do I not want to give up the control? That’s because my beliefs in the past could have been nobody ever does it like I do it.
[00:10:05] Katie Bell: Nobody cares as much as I care. It’s just much easier if I just do it myself. And so with that mindset behind that, you’ll then start to find team that are not empowered. You’ll find Operational stuff that is not being followed. Your systems won’t be a bag of shit because it’ll all be in your head as the business owner.
[00:10:22] Katie Bell: Because you’re too worried about passing that control off. Sometimes we can go as a business owner they’re not doing what I said that they should be doing. And they’re not following processes and they’re not doing this. And actually, we have to unravel all of that and come back down to you as the business owner and go, But why?
[00:10:40] Katie Bell: Why? And it’s because One of the biggest challenges that we see with our clinic owners is that they are burnt out. They are, we have got a problem in our industry. We are tight, poor, overworked, exhausted, burnt out. Lots of them are still not recovered from the
[00:10:56] Philippa Aldridge: COVID crisis
[00:10:57] Katie Bell: that went on in their businesses, but we’re holding on to more.
[00:11:02] Katie Bell: And our mindset then is, okay I just have to be the one that fixes this. I have to be the one that solves that. I have to control everything. I have to be the one spinning all the play. And
[00:11:11] Philippa Aldridge: that creates huge
[00:11:14] Katie Bell: issues that in a business that’s
[00:11:15] Philippa Aldridge: trying to grow. Yeah. Yeah. And it creates a lot of fear. And so that then creates a lot of stress.
[00:11:22] Philippa Aldridge: And so therefore we’re constantly in our stress response and we’re to be able to move out of that and to be able to change a belief and change how one’s habits are loyal and familiar behaviors. That’s where we have to. We have to work on our mindset. We have to look, like you said, inward rather than externally and try and do more.
[00:11:45] Philippa Aldridge: And again, that’s another mindset thing to unpick and look at is why is that your default setting? To then go and look at that. And obviously that’s stuff that I’m doing all the time with people in Thrive because it is just, that is how it is. But I think it’s, I always come back to this quote. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, right?
[00:12:11] Philippa Aldridge: If you are still, As a business owner doing more, and you’re still time poor, still burnt out, still haven’t got the life and business that you want, then I call you out today and I say, do something different. Don’t do more strategy. Don’t do, take more action. Work on your mindset.
[00:12:31] Philippa Aldridge: Because otherwise you’re going to end up losing your mind as you burn out as well. And I’ve done that. And that’s another reason why I’m so passionate about working on my mindset and encouraging others and sharing the love for working on your mindset, because I know what not working on it can do to you.
[00:12:47] Philippa Aldridge: And that’s why, another reason why we do what we do, because we don’t want anybody else to have hit the roadblocks that we’ve hit. Or any of those. And I think it’s, it might, it takes bravery to say I’m going to do something different. And it can feel scary for a part of us, especially if we are in that stress response.
[00:13:09] Philippa Aldridge: But this is again the beauty of not doing it on your own. As well, with people who’ve been there and done it, but mindset work doesn’t have to happen on your own. It isn’t you on your own sitting on an island. Mindset work is about working with some, with other people who can walk with you on that journey, ask you the questions where you’re going to have to be brave and look inward, but also know how to support you.
[00:13:37] Philippa Aldridge: If things don’t look aren’t as great as you wanted them to be, but I think, can I just share about the three types of fear? I can’t help it. I can’t help. Is it? Yeah. Okay. There are three types of fear as a holistic mindset coach. There are three types of fear, a fear of failure, fear of success and fear of knowing self.
[00:13:53] Philippa Aldridge: As a business owner, you are starting to step into your zone of genius when you start running, and you need to step into your zones of genius, but your ego doesn’t want you to do that because it then knows that you’re going to be doing a more evolved way of being, and you actually start to know yourself.
[00:14:09] Philippa Aldridge: And that can be really scary for the ego because that can mean that you then move away from loyal and familiar ways of being, and duh. That’s what you need to do! And that’s how, when we work on your mindset, to then step into knowing yourself and to not be scared of that, because it’s, we can look at that and we can work through it.
[00:14:31] Philippa Aldridge: And so that you can efficiently and effectively process it. And I think, Mindset work is not easy, but it’s the thing that’s going to set you free. And every person that we work with is brave and courageous because they step up and they go, I want to do something different. And we’re there. We meet you right there and we’ll go let’s do it.
[00:14:55] Philippa Aldridge: I’m with you. And, but I and I, sorry. Going on.
[00:14:59] Katie Bell: That’s one of the reasons that people get such incredible results. Yes. Within a week. Yes. Within a week. They’re making changes with, and it’s not that we’re doing anything hugely different, it’s just that we recognize the importa of importance of this.
[00:15:14] Katie Bell: We offer the support where the support is needed. . And we, as you say, take them on this journey. We’re there with them every step of the way. And I think so many business owners who. We’ll be listening to this. Are forever looking for what I call the magic pill. They’re forever looking for that one thing.
[00:15:30] Katie Bell: That one thing that’s going to set them free. They’re going to I’m going to invest in Facebook ads. Oh how’s that working out for you? I’m more money on Google. I’m going to do this. And they just do. I’m going to do more. I’m going to pay somebody else to do this for me because that will set me free.
[00:15:43] Katie Bell: And they’re just going round and round that merry go round, which is not so
[00:15:46] Philippa Aldridge: merry. And they are just spinning
[00:15:49] Katie Bell: out of control. And. Mindset work isn’t the magic pill. I’m not suggesting that it is, but with if we don’t look to this as one of
[00:15:58] Philippa Aldridge: the key foundations
[00:16:00] Katie Bell: in your business if you constantly think you can out strategy it, you can just work harder, you can just double down.
[00:16:06] Katie Bell: I am here as living proof that you can’t just double down and you can’t work any harder. And I, we have to constantly unpick that. Those beliefs and when you think you’ve unpicked it and you go to the next level and it crops up again And you’re like wow thought I dealt with that clearly.
[00:16:25] Katie Bell: I’ve got more work to do here Yeah, this is like him like training, isn’t it? You know you go you don’t go to the gym for a month and then think well, that’s it I’m gonna be fit for the rest of my life. We have to be consistent in our approach.
[00:16:36] Philippa Aldridge: Yep And it’s, and I think that this mindset work, like I said, it’s not a magic pill.
[00:16:42] Philippa Aldridge: However, if you are just doing, and you have no, and you’re just doing strategy and you’ve got no mindset work running alongside that it’s like putting petrol in your car, but not put an oil in the engine. Yeah. It just doesn’t work. It will work for a little while, but then all of a sudden it’s going to go bang.
[00:17:01] Philippa Aldridge: Yeah, or you’re going to go bang. Yes, or. So it’s so important that the two things are together. The combination is magic, as it were. But it’s not necessarily the thing that our ego wants to look at because it knows if you’re looking at your mindset, you’re going to evolve. And as far as it’s concerned, that means you’re going to move out of your comfort zone and it doesn’t want you to do that.
[00:17:31] Philippa Aldridge: And it, I I will bang on about mindset work all the time. You know how much I love it. It is a, obviously a passion of mine, but I still work on my mindset all the time. I have a mindset coach. I don’t just think because I’m this, I’m done. I’m not done. It’s something you work on constantly, like you said.
[00:17:52] Philippa Aldridge: And if you are listening to this now and you are not working on your mindset,
[00:17:59] Katie Bell: Because I can tell you why. Because they’re too busy. They’re too busy being busy. And I say that with a huge amount of love to all of you listening to this as you’re bombing on your
[00:18:08] Philippa Aldridge: way to work on a Wednesday morning.
[00:18:09] Katie Bell: Because I know that this podcast drops on a Wednesday. And I know lots of you are in the car, stressed up to your eyeballs, trying to wrestle the traffic to get to your clinic to see a day full of patients.
[00:18:19] Katie Bell: And this is like your 20 minutes of tonic. And what will happen is you will get to work, And some knob will have called in sick, and you’ll go, your patient’s going to be late, and your admin’s not doing what they need to do, and something about your software is not going to work. Because I’ve been there.
[00:18:36] Katie Bell: I understand. You feel like you’re just making progress and swipe, something else takes, takes a side shot at you. So I know that you’re going to get out, jump out your car, grab your lunchbox, leg it into the clinic, and then another day will go by. But until you just stop and decide that you are going to do something different, you’re going to be here again in another month, in another year, just feeling completely exhausted and completely burnt out.
[00:19:02] Katie Bell: And isn’t it amazing? I always think I’m as I would What I would be classed as a strategic coach, aren’t I? I’m like the one that’s okay, what’s the actions? What are we going to do? How are we going to make this happen? And then you come in with all of the gorgeous mindset stuff that needs to wrap around that and support that in making them be able to implement all the plans that I’ve got for them and all the things that they can go and do in that business.
[00:19:24] Katie Bell: But isn’t it funny that every time I go and deliver something, whether it’s one of our amazing strategy days or whether it’s our Therapist Transformation course or our Integrator Masterclasses, it always boils down to the mindset behind it. Always. Even though I try to think I’m just going to stay strategic with this, it
[00:19:43] Philippa Aldridge: all comes back to the mindset.
[00:19:46] Philippa Aldridge: Yeah, because it is the fundamental foundation of everything because it is that fiber that is running through. And as I said at the beginning, you are your business. Your business is you because you ha it has been started birthed by you. So therefore you have to be in that amazing top notch condition. To make sure that is then reflected in the business.
[00:20:13] Philippa Aldridge: Don’t matter whether you’re working in it or on it, even if you’ve taken a step back and actually you don’t do very much in it anymore, which might be what you want to do, it’s still born from you and you have to be in that great state. And I’m not then advocating, just work on your mindset and it’s all going to fall into place.
[00:20:33] Philippa Aldridge: That’s not what I’m saying here, people. The two things go hand in hand. And for those people who are incredibly busy and time poor and I felt that if that was me getting out the car with my lunch box and in my race, I would have tripped over my seat belt, right? And banged my head on the corner of the car door as well.
[00:20:52] Philippa Aldridge: Because that’s just me, I’m a little bit clumsy. I own it, people, I own it. But it helps you. If you’re thinking, Oh that’s all well and good. That’s a bit pie in the sky. It’s not pie in the sky. We work with people every single day. Yeah. Who are making those changes on the floor as it were.
[00:21:11] Philippa Aldridge: Yeah. They are doing that. You are Katie, a living and breathing representation of how working on your mindset can change how your business is. And you can work on your mindset. Without being in a situation where you have to stop your business and start again, we can keep your business going and we do.
[00:21:34] Philippa Aldridge: It’s not like you have to start from scratch. You can work on your mindset and still have your business running and still be working in the clinic and on the clinic or in the business and on the business. I’m making changes. It’s as big or as small as you want it to be. It’s as much mindset work or as just little changes over time make such a big difference.
[00:21:58] Philippa Aldridge: So if you’re listening to this and thinking, I can’t do it, I don’t even have 10 minutes to have a wee during the day, right? One minute, I’ll give you 30 seconds of something to do. I’ll even habit stack for you and you can do it while you’re having a pee. Yes. All right. So that you’re working on your mindset.
[00:22:16] Philippa Aldridge: That’s how we can do this. There are things that can be done and I also enjoy that challenge. So if you’re not working on your mindset, it can be done, even if you are incredibly busy.
[00:22:27] Katie Bell: Phillippa, thank you so much for giving up your time and for any of you who are about to get out the car, do not trip over your seatbelt.
[00:22:35] Katie Bell: wow, wow, wow. Do you not just feel ever slightly more inspired? Just 20 is all anybody ever needs. She is just the most wonderful person, she’s the most wonderful team member, and the most wonderful coach. If What she has said has really resonated with you today, then I would encourage you to just take a moment today and decide what are you going to do differently.
[00:23:01] Katie Bell: And if you don’t know how to work on your mindset and you don’t know where to start and you don’t want to take this journey on your own and you don’t actually know whether your mindset is the issue, because a lot of us, a lot of us will think that, Oh no, we’re fine. I feel fine. I’m all good. I’m not the biggest barrier.
[00:23:16] Katie Bell: If you want. To continue this conversation because it’s only just the start, then I would really encourage you to book a business and marketing audit call with me. It is a one hour call, 60 minutes completely for free, where we are going to dive in together to, to these four foundations. And we’re going to figure out together, which of the four foundations that we’ve just talked about on the last four episodes are the biggest Barriers for you and what we need to do about them.
[00:23:42] Katie Bell: I’m going to send you away with a 30 day action plan. So irrelevant of what happens on the call, you’re going to leave with that. And at least you’re going to feel like somebody from the outside is able to look into your business and really help them pick where those barriers are, where those obstacles are, and most importantly, what you can then go and do about it.
[00:24:02] Katie Bell: You can head to the link in the show notes to be able to book that call with me. But, um, I just really hope that you’ve taken as much from. That episode as I have. Have a great rest of your day.
[00:24:15] Katie Bell: Thanks so much for listening to this show. Remember content consumption does not make changes, so commit to doing something from today’s episode. Maybe it’s taking action on what we talked about. Maybe it’s reaching out to me and learning more about our transformational coaching programs. Or if you have not yet, join our free Treat Your Business Facebook group, a free access to over 30 business masterclasses.
[00:24:36] Katie Bell: All of that is over at thrive businesscoaching. com or linked in the show notes.
