Why Having a Master Plan Is Vital for Your Business Success

Good Morning Readers,

When I started my business, I was driven by a deep passion for what I do. I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, to enhance their health and wellness, and to create something meaningful. Sound familiar? Maybe you’re in this field for the same reason. Some of you may have dreamt of this path, while others may have found themselves here after stepping away from the NHS. Whatever your journey, I see so many clinic owners struggling with a common challenge: being overwhelmed, overworked, and lacking direction.

Recently, at Clinic Growth Live, I had the privilege of working with clinic owners who were ready to take control of their businesses. It was an incredible day, full of energy, transformation, and actionable insights. We tackled an issue that plagues so many of us: the absence of a clear master plan. If you weren’t able to join us, don’t worry—I want to share some key takeaways with you.

Many clinic owners find themselves stuck on a never-ending hamster wheel. You start off with a thriving practice—your reputation grows, word-of-mouth referrals keep your diary full, and everything seems great. Then the demands increase. Clinical hours stretch to six days a week. Lunchtimes disappear. You’re juggling 70+ patients weekly, invoicing insurance companies, responding to emails, creating treatment plans, and the list goes on.

Before you know it, your business is like an overgrown tree—out of control, chaotic, and impossible to manage. I often compare it to Japanese knotweed, a persistent and invasive plant that takes years to get rid of. It’s a nightmare, and if you’re constantly firefighting—dealing with staff absences, patient no-shows, and unexpected crises—you’re not alone.

But why does this happen? The root cause often lies in the lack of a clear plan. Without clarity around your “why” and a vision for your business, it’s easy to lose focus and direction.

Imagine setting off on a journey from Sheffield to Scotland without a sat nav or a map. You’d waste hours, burn fuel, and go in circles. Running your business without a plan is no different. You might be working harder than ever, but are you actually getting closer to your goals?

Your master plan is the foundation of your success. It’s what helps you reconnect with your “why” and ensure it aligns with your current priorities. Define clear goals—whether that’s increasing revenue, gaining more time, or creating a better work-life balance. Make strategic decisions that drive growth while keeping you in control of your business.

At Clinic Growth Live, we encouraged clinic owners to step away from their daily operations and focus on the bigger picture. Taking this time out is crucial. In our Thrive Clarity Days, we dedicate time to evaluate businesses from an external perspective. This process is transformative.

For instance, in my own practice, one planning session revealed an opportunity to increase revenue by £300,000—without adding more staff or overheads. Had I spent that day treating patients, I might have made £1,500 in gross revenue. But stepping back allowed me to see the bigger picture, and the impact was far greater.

Yes, taking a day out might feel like a sacrifice. But the long-term benefits—more time, more profit, and more clarity—are worth it.

To create a business that serves you, start by asking yourself: Why am I doing this? Is it financial security? Freedom? Time with your family? Whatever it is, your “why” should guide every decision you make. Your business should support your life, not consume it. If you’re working longer hours for less money than you would in a job, it’s time to reevaluate. Think about what truly matters to you and ensure your business aligns with those priorities.

Let’s be honest—making money is important. Profit is what allows you to hire great staff, expand your services, and create a lasting impact. Without it, your business can’t thrive. Some clinic owners shy away from focusing on profit, but there’s nothing wrong with being driven by financial goals. Money is a byproduct of running an efficient, impactful business. It gives you the freedom to live the life you want and make a difference on your terms.

So, what’s your plan? Whether you’re running between patients, sitting at your desk, or tackling the endless demands of family life, take a moment to reflect. Why are you running your business? What do you want it to achieve for you—financially, personally, and professionally? Are you working towards a vision, or just working harder?

It’s time to take control. Step back, map out your goals, and create a business that serves you—not the other way around.
