When Leadership Feels Overwhelming: A Raw and Honest Chat

Hello Readers

How are you? I hope you had a very merry Christmas Day are you’re still in Christmas holiday mode!

Let’s get real today. Running a clinic is no walk in the park and im sure many of you are forward thinking into a positive start to January. It’s not all about Pilates classes and client success stories. There are days when the weight of everything feels insurmountable—too many clients, demanding team members, cash flow struggles, and that endless to-do list.

I like to say, “80% of all your problems will come on two legs,” and for clinic owners, that usually means clients or team members. It’s the moments when your coping “battery” feels completely drained that truly test you as a leader. With the festive season in full swing—many of us are gearing up to kick start January, but when you’re running on empty, it’s easy to feel like giving up.

If you’re in that space, or if you’ve been there before, this is for you. And if you’re not there right now, amazing! But tuck this away because every leader faces challenges. Let’s talk about how to lead when you feel like throwing in the towel.

First things first: you are not alone. Every clinic owner has faced moments of doubt. I remember a time a few years into my business when it felt like everything was falling apart—clients cancelling, staff issues, cash flow tighter than my hamstrings, and the universe seemingly conspiring against me. Back then, I thought working harder was the solution. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. What I didn’t realise was how much my mindset mattered. Leadership is tough, emotional, and messy. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. What matters is what you do next.

I wanted to share the steps that have helped me, and many others, navigate those tough moments. When your mind is racing and everything feels out of control, hit pause. Yes, pause. Write down everything that’s bothering you—cash flow worries, staff issues, or lack of personal time. Brain dump it all. Then categorise it and ask yourself: What’s the one thing causing me the most stress right now? Focus on solving that first. Running a clinic can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be. Lean on others—your mentor, coach, or even a trusted friend who understands your world. Share your frustrations. Often, just voicing them helps you see solutions more clearly.

If you have a team, trust them. Show vulnerability—not in a way that causes panic, but in a way that fosters trust. And if you need a community, join one. Groups like Physio First or even our free Facebook group can be a game changer.

When everything feels overwhelming, it’s hard to see progress. For a week, write down three wins at the end of each day. They can be tiny—like responding to all your emails or having a good conversation with a client. This practice helps shift your focus from what’s not working to what is. When you’re on the hamster wheel of chaos, it’s easy to lose sight of why you started in the first place. Remind yourself of the difference you’re making in people’s lives. Read your Google reviews if you need a boost.

Sometimes, it’s not about giving up; it’s about letting go of what no longer serves you. Whether it’s a service that doesn’t align with your mission or tasks you should be delegating, freeing yourself from these burdens can be transformative. Leadership is about prioritising what matters most. It’s about making bold decisions that align with your vision, even if they’re uncomfortable. You’re not here to play small or live an average life. You’re here to make a massive impact.

When it feels like too much, remember: you’re stronger than you think. Get clear on the real issues, break the isolation, celebrate the small wins, reconnect with your purpose, and let go of what’s holding you back. Its time to kickstart January on a positive note!

You’ve got this. And if you need help, know there’s a community of clinic owners who’ve been where you are, ready to support you. Let’s lead together—stronger and better than ever.
