The Business Rollercoaster: Lessons from Marketing, Mindset, and More

Good Morning Readers

Running a business is often likened to a rollercoaster, and for good reason. For me, it’s always brought to mind Blackpool Pleasure Beach, where I spent childhood days navigating rickety, thrilling rides. Some were exhilarating; others felt like they might fall apart at any moment—a lot like owning and running a business.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in the relentless cycle of “just getting through the day,” this blog is for you. Whether it’s understanding your unique value proposition, mastering marketing basics, or shifting your mindset, I’m here to share insights to help you step off the hamster wheel and steer your business with purpose.

Let’s start with something fundamental: not everyone needs your product or service. The aim isn’t to appeal to everyone but to connect with those who share your values. Here’s a truth I often share with business owners: most of what we offer—our treatments, products, or services—can be found elsewhere, at similar prices, and with comparable quality. So why do clients choose you?

The answer lies in what you believe and why you do what you do. Clients often don’t know the technicalities of your work—they’re simply looking for a solution to their problem. They’re at “Point A,” stuck in pain, uncertainty, or frustration, and they need you to guide them to “Point B.” Selling your service isn’t about the what or the how. It’s about communicating your why.

Economic uncertainty can shake even the most seasoned entrepreneurs, but there are practical steps to shield your business. I recently recorded a podcast on recession-proofing, sharing seven actionable steps to stay resilient. From understanding your numbers to refining your client engagement strategies, the essence is simple: preparation beats panic.

A strong business isn’t built on guesswork—it’s built on clarity. What’s your strategy for weathering challenges? If you’re unsure, now’s the time to create one.

Many of us fall into the trap of thinking, “When I have X, then I’ll do Y, and finally, I’ll be Z.” For example, “When I have more clients, I’ll invest in marketing, and then I’ll feel successful.” But success doesn’t work that way. Instead, flip the script: “Who do I need to be? What actions will that lead to? And what results will follow?”

This principle is a game-changer. Start by identifying the version of yourself that aligns with your goals. If you want a thriving business, embody the qualities of a thriving business owner—confidence, clarity, and commitment. The rest will follow.

Too often, business owners dive into marketing without laying the groundwork, leading to frustration and wasted budgets. Effective marketing isn’t about jumping into the latest trend; it’s about strategy.

Before you write your next blog or launch your next campaign, ask yourself-Do I know my audience? Do I have a clear message? Am I repurposing content to maximise its value?

A blog, for instance, is more than words on a page. It’s a tool to connect, educate, and inspire potential clients. When used strategically, it drives engagement and builds trust, ultimately turning readers into loyal customers.

Your money mindset plays a critical role in your success. How you price your services, manage your budget, and reinvest profits is often tied to deeply ingrained beliefs. Many business owners shy away from spending money on marketing or tools, fearing it’s too risky. But as I tell my clients, you can’t grow a business without investing in it.

Think of marketing as fuel for your business engine. Without it, you’re coasting on fumes. Whether you’re spending £100 or £10,000, what matters is having a clear plan and a measurable return on investment.

Client re-engagement is a powerful yet often overlooked strategy. Most businesses focus on acquiring new clients but neglect the goldmine of existing ones. Regular follow-ups, personalised support, and educational resources can turn one-time clients into lifelong advocates.

It’s not just about retention—it’s about creating a seamless, welcoming experience that sets you apart. From the moment they walk into your clinic, clients should feel at ease. Details like clear directions, parking info, and setting expectations go a long way in building trust.

If there’s one thing that underpins success, it’s consistency. Whether it’s being visible in your marketing, staying disciplined with your finances, or showing up daily to do the work, consistency beats quick fixes every time.

I often hear, “How have you grown your businesses?” The answer is straightforward: I’ve shown up, day in and day out, even when it felt challenging. It’s about doing the little things well, over and over, until they add up to something extraordinary.

Running a business isn’t always smooth sailing—it’s a rollercoaster with highs, lows, and unexpected turns. But with the right mindset, a clear strategy, and a commitment to your goals, you can thrive through the ups and downs.
